当饱受金钱困扰的单身妈妈Sarah Braverman（Lauren Graham，《吉尔莫女孩》），卖掉了弗雷斯诺（加利福尼亚中部城市）的公寓，带着她两个玩劣不堪的孩子Amber（Mae Whitman）和Drew（Miles Heizer）回到伯克利（加利福尼亚西部城市）的父母家里时，受到了父母的热情欢迎。顽固不化的父亲Zeek（Craig T. Nelson）和个性强硬的母亲Camille（Bonnie Bedelia）的婚姻此时已很成问题。Sarah很快见到了她的兄弟姐妹们－－妹妹Julia（Erika Christensen ）和兄弟Crosby（Dax Shepard）、Adam（Peter Krause）。真是家家有本难念的经，这番「家人团聚」对于帮助他们面对现代家庭生活的挑战至关重要。
该剧除了主题同样讲述「为人父母之道」外，几乎与原作（电影）毫无瓜葛。
Braverman 家和所有三代同堂的家庭一样，有争执、有嬉闹、有亲情。他们世代居住在伯克利的老房子里，Sarah（Lauren Graham）是惟一踏出过伯克利的家庭成员，却因为财政危机不得不带着两个未成年的孩子Drew（Miles Heizer）和Amber（Mae Whitman）离开弗雷斯诺回到父母身边，与父亲Zeek（Craig T. Nelson）和母亲Camille（Bonnie Bedelia）住在一起。
Sarah的兄弟姐妹－－魅力男孩Adam（Peter Krause），工作狂Julia（Erika Chrstensen）和懒鬼Crosby（Dax Shepard），各有各的烦心事儿。身为律师的Julia惭愧地发现，女儿Sydney（Savannah Argenti）和待业在家的老爸Joel（Sam Jaeger）更加亲昵；音乐制作人Crosby的女友兼老板Katie（Marguerite Moreau）正给他施加「生育压力」；Adam和他憔悴不堪的妻子Kristina（Monica Potter）有个古灵精怪的儿子Max（Max Burkholder），Max最近被查出患有某种疾病，这可能改变这一家人的命运。
家家有本难念的经，戏里戏外都一样。Zeek认为对付Max就得来硬的，但是Adam竭力维护Max和女儿Hattie（Sarah Ramos），不想让他们遭遇自己童年时的经历；Julia想撮合Sarah和Jim（Mike O'Malley），这位Julia曾经错过的「旧爱」现在是星巴克咖啡店的职员，还是个激情四溢的诗人；Crosby遭到前女友兼舞蹈演员的纠缠，只好求Adam来救火，自己好抽身去解决他和Katie的问题。然而，无论是傻呵呵的Jim偶然迸发出的魅力，还是专横跋扈的Zeek不经意间表达出的温柔，事情的发展往往出人意料。对于Hattie这样的小辈也一样，当她「奉命」管教野孩子Amber时，才发现真正有问题的人其实是她自己。
